WHERE AMATEUR ATHLETES ARE SEEN, CELEBRATED AND CONNECTED
More Than a Photographer: Through the Eyes of an Athlete
"The story of Peter Ahm, founder of Amateur Athlete, and the athlete's perspective that shapes every photograph he takes." Camera in hand, eyes alert to every movement, he walks with a calm and measured pace. Never in a hurry. First, he studies the scene in front of him. Then, he raises his camera and clicks. A quick glance at the screen follows. A smile appears—like a child who has just gotten away with a harmless prank. This is Peter Ahm.
Peter Ahm, Founder and Editor-in-Chief of Amateur Athlete, brings more than 25 years of experience in sports photography, media, and sports management across Europe and South America. His journey includes athletics, elite-level handball, endurance cycling, and ten years as the administrative director of a professional cycling team in Brazil.
Today, we sit down with this fascinating figure from the world of sport.
## How did you become a sports photographer?
I have always loved photography.
As a child, the rare moments when I had a camera in my hands seemed to make time disappear. Years later, while managing a cycling club in Brazil, we needed photographs to promote our team and support media coverage. So I became the photographer.
I took courses, studied, specialized, and never stopped. What began as a necessity soon became a passion.
## Besides cycling, which sport do you feel most connected to?
In general, I love all sports because I respect athletes. I was an athlete myself.
For me, the Olympic Games represent the greatest sporting event in the world. That is how deeply I love sport.
That said, cycling and athletics will always hold a special place in my heart because they are closely connected to my own life story.
## What is your dream as a sports photographer?
To be part of a Tour de France team and document everything behind the scenes.
The mechanics, the physiotherapists, the tensions, the celebrations, the victories and disappointments.
I would love to tell the story of cyclists before and after they cross the start and finish lines. The public sees the race; I want to show the human side behind it.
## Why did you create Amateur Athlete?
Because I respect every athlete.
Amateur athletes are the foundation of sport. They are where dreams begin and talent is developed.
I was once an athlete, and I know how meaningful it is to see yourself in a photograph, to read your name in an article, or to see your club recognized.
I created Amateur Athlete to put the spotlight on amateur athletes.
They deserve it.
## What would you say to an amateur athlete standing in front of your camera?
Be yourself.
I will look for the very best in you and show it to the world.
The Fear
What is an athlete’s greatest fear? Not being selected for the next competition? Missing the qualifying time for a semifinal or final? Losing the podium in the last second?
I would argue that what truly haunts a disciplined and dedicated athlete is something else: the ghost of an unexpected injury.
The name says it all. Something that appears suddenly, without warning — and always at the worst possible moment.
A semifinal. A final. The race of a lifetime.
A muscle strain. A tear. It has no address, no schedule. It simply happens. And when it does, it can feel as unsettling as the old stories told under the moonlight — the kind that stay with you long after they are over.
But beyond the physical care, an injured athlete needs something deeper: support, understanding, and the warmth of those around them. Because the pain is not only in the body.
It is in the moment that almost was. In the opportunity that slipped away. Recovery, far from the tracks, the arenas, the rhythm of training, can feel like a quiet form of suffering.
To understand sport is to understand this too: athletes are not made only of victories, but also of injuries, setbacks, and tears.
Perhaps sport was created by the gods, as the ancient Greeks believed. But it is lived — fully and vulnerably — by humans.
Or maybe… something in between.
