Camera in hand, eyes alert to every movement, he walks with a calm and measured pace. Never in a hurry. First, he studies the scene in front of him. Then, he raises his camera and clicks. A quick glance at the screen follows. A smile appears—like a child who has just gotten away with a harmless prank. This is Peter Ahm.
Peter Ahm, Founder and Editor-in-Chief of Amateur Athlete, brings more than 25 years of experience in sports photography, media, and sports management across Europe and South America. His journey includes athletics, elite-level handball, endurance cycling, and fifteen years as the administrative director of a professional cycling team in Brazil.
Today, we sit down with this fascinating figure from the world of sport.
How did you become a sports photographer?
I have always loved photography. As a child, the rare moments when I had a camera in my hands seemed to make time disappear. Years later, while managing a cycling club in Brazil, we needed photographs to promote our team and support media coverage. So I became the photographer. I took courses online, studied, specialized, and never stopped. What began as a necessity soon became a passion.
Besides cycling, which sport do you feel most connected to?
In general, I love all sports because I respect athletes. I was an athlete myself. For me, the Olympic Games represent the greatest sporting event in the world. That is how deeply I love sport. That said, cycling and athletics will always hold a special place in my heart because they are closely connected to my own life story.
What is your dream as a sports photographer?
To be part of a Tour de France team and document everything behind the scenes. The mechanics, the physiotherapists, the tensions, the celebrations, the victories and disappointments. I would love to tell the story of cyclists before and after they cross the start and finish lines. The public sees the race; I want to show the human side behind it.
Why did you create Amateur Athlete?
Because I respect every athlete. Amateur athletes are the foundation of sport. They are where dreams begin and talent is developed. I was once an athlete, and I know how meaningful it is to see yourself in a photograph, to read your name in an article, or to see your club recognized. I created Amateur Athlete to put the spotlight on amateur athletes. They deserve it.
What would you say to an amateur athlete standing in front of your camera?
Be yourself. I will look for the very best in you and show it to the world.
